Church as a family
When we accept God’s offer and are reborn, we become a member of God’s family. Every spiritual child needs a spiritual family. God is our heavenly father, and as followers of Jesus, we are like brothers and sisters. Family means a safe place to grow and to learn who we are as children of God. Family provides care, and we learn how to live in relationships.
Church as a body
We are the body of Jesus – that’s how the New Testament describes the relationship between Jesus and His followers. A body means that everyone is a part and has a special role. Jesus is the head; we need to be connected to Him so that He can coordinate everything and lead us. We’re supposed to work together just like a body does. That way we resemble Jesus and He can work through us.
Church as a team
A team is a group of people who decide to work together for a common vision. They train together and do whatever is necessary to reach the goal. Jesus wants His church to be united for His kingdom. He shows us who we could build a team with and who should train us.
Therefore it is clear that “church” is not a building, but a group of followers of Jesus. Church can meet anywhere: in parks, schools, cafés, church buildings, offices, at home or online.

Church in the Book of Acts
In the New Testament, the word “church” is used in three different ways:
# All the followers of Jesus in the world (the global “body of Christ”)
# All the followers of Jesus in a city / a region
Example: the “church in Jerusalem” (Acts 11:22)
# A group of followers of Jesus that regularly meet together
Example: the “church in the house of Priscilla and Aquila” (Romans 16:5)

Here we look at the third meaning. What elements make up a specific church?

Italic
Elements of church
Baptism
The word “baptism” means “to immerse, submerge” as cleansing or washing. Just as Jesus was baptised, we join with Him by getting baptized ourselves. Jesus commands His followers:
“... baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19)

Read Acts 2:38 again, and see how it explains this and shows the main parts of “re-birth”:
We repent and bury our old life. In the same way that Jesus was buried and then rose again to life, we go under water in baptism and come out of the water with a new life (Romans 6:1-11). Then in our new family we start a totally new lifestyle guided by the example of Jesus and filled with the Holy Spirit. (See the worksheet “Baptism” for more details).

The Lord’s Supper
Jesus set the Lord’s Supper so that we remember His death and the shedding of His blood for our sins (Luke 22:15-20). We take time to reflect on what Jesus did for us and to give thanks. When we have it, we should examine our actions and confess our sins (1 Corinthians 11:23-29, see also worksheet “Confessing Sins and Repenting”).

Covenant
A group of people who have been baptised now decides to follow Jesus together. They make a covenant with each other, start to see themselves as a church and commit to doing God’s will together.

Leaders
Healthy churches have leaders who care about the others and support them to do God’s will in all parts of their lives.

Giving
Giving thank-you gifts to God is an act of worship. We offer sacrifices to God in many areas of our life, e.g. with our time and our abilities. God has also asked us to give parts of our finances to Him. This is an important way to give into the family of God – His global, regional and local kingdom.

Worship
We praise God and are in His presence.

Fellowship
We lovingly care about each other and are ready to sacrifice for each other.

Prayer
Together we talk with God.

Training
We read the Bible and teach everyone to obey God in everyday life.

Multiplication
We share the gospel and make disciples by the power of the Holy Spirit.

----

__NOTOC__<sidebar>sidebar-essentials</sidebar><languages/>
God wants to speak to everyone. But whether we hear Him, often depends more on us than on Him: “Have I asked God to speak to me?” “Am I taking time to listen to Him?” “Am I ready to do what He says?” These are the essential requirements to hear from God and to become more and more familiar with the many ways He speaks.
We use the word “hearing” here, but we need to be aware that God is Spirit and uses all our senses to communicate with us. That means we’re actually “sensing” God.

Everyone can hear something from God. But in order to hear from Him regularly and to live in a relationship with God, it is necessary that we are filled with the Holy Spirit. Then He is living in us and shaping our thinking and our feelings more and more so that we can sense more clearly what God wants to say to us.
If we feel like we aren’t receiving anything from God, it is possible that there is an obstacle blocking the communication between God and us. This could be sin that I need to turn away from, a distraction, or a hurt. To hear clearly from God we need to remove everything that is standing between Him and us.
The aim is that we really know God and live in close contact with Him just as with a good friend.

If you feel like God is not speaking to you, then you can ask: “God, is there a wall between me and you?” If the answer is yes, pray together with an experienced trainer to find out where it comes from and how to take it down.

Ways God speaks to us
Bible
The Bible is like God’s letter for all of us and contains all the main things God wants us to know (2 Timothy 3:16). Everything that God speaks will be in agreement with the Bible.

Dreams
God can speak to us while we’re sleeping. We can learn to interpret dreams to understand what they mean (Job 33:14-17; Genesis 40:1-41:40; Matthew 1:20).

Other people
It is normal that God speaks to you through your leaders or trainers. But as any brothers and sisters in God’s family, God can give us impressions for each other. Someone may come up to you and his words for you could actually be from God.

Inner thoughts and impressions
When the Holy Spirit lives in us, He shapes our thoughts and can give us impressions at any time. This could be through our conscience and through thoughts that come up and remind us of the things that God wants. Or we might see something like a picture in our mind’s eye by which God wants to show us something (Acts 10:10-11).

Incidents
God has given us eyes, ears, and a mind so that we use them. Sometimes we see someone we should help. This might be God speaking by making people come across each other. In such situations we can first observe and then ask God what our responsibility is (Matthew 11:2-6; 27:54).

Three different voices
In our lives we are constantly hearing different opinions, so we need to learn to discern which source they come from: From God? From people (myself and others)? Or from the devil?
These are characteristics of the different voices:

scope="col" style="width:33%"| The voice of God
scope="col" style="width:33%"| The voice of people
scope="col" style="width:33%"| The voice of the devil
style="vertical-align:top"|
* encouraging, full of love, good, perfect (Romans 12:2)
* fits to what the Bible says
* can be inconvenient: revealing sin, challenging us
* intention: to build up
style="vertical-align:top"|
* driven by own interests (knowingly or unknowingly)
* characterized by own experience: “for me it was like this, so it must be the same for others”
style="vertical-align:top"|
* frightening, discouraging
* contradicting God’s will / Bible
* creating divisions, discord
* intention: to shame, to blame, to accuse, to tear down

Discerning: What is from God? (1 Thessalonians 5:19-21)
* What does the Bible say about it? The Bible is the most important authority to test something. If something is contradicting God’s principles in the Bible, then it’s not from God.
* Is it good? Does it align with the character of God?
* What do other mature brothers and sisters say about it? If you’re unsure, ask your leader or trainer for advice.
* Do I have peace about it? God’s supernatural peace can cause us to have an inner certainty about something. Likewise, constant unrest can be a sign that I need to ask God more to get clarity. But we shouldn’t expect 100% certainty. God doesn’t want to dictate us every detail about our life - He gives us the freedom to make choices. He wants us to take steps closer to Him by trusting Him and by taking responsibility for our decisions.

Important: There are some questions where it is easier to hear God’s answers (Examples: “God, who do I need to forgive?” “Where do you see sin in my life and want me to repent?”)
With other questions it is harder to discern God’s voice (“God, who should I marry?”), and some, God probably won’t answer at the moment (“How will my next 20 years look?”)
Sometimes we get stuck in asking why-questions. Often these aren’t helpful to our immediate lives and growth. Or we couldn’t deal with the answer so God won’t give it to us.

Italic

Two extremes about dealing with God’s voice
scope="col" style="width:15%"|
scope="col" style="width:40%"| Self-confidence in hearing God’s voice is too low
scope="col" style="width:5%"| ↔
scope="col" style="width:40%"| Self-confidence in hearing God’s voice is too high / pride
style="vertical-align:top"| Belief:
style="vertical-align:top"|God doesn’t talk to me.
style="vertical-align:top;text-align:center"| ↔
style="vertical-align:top"|Everything I hear is from God.
style="vertical-align:top"| Typical:
style="vertical-align:top"|“My thoughts are not God’s thoughts.”
style="vertical-align:top;text-align:center| ↔
style="vertical-align:top"|“God says … !”
“I don’t need to test this.”
style="vertical-align:top"|The truth:
style="vertical-align:top"|The Holy Spirit is in you, that’s why many of your thoughts are God’s thoughts!
style="vertical-align:top;text-align:center| ↔
style="vertical-align:top"|We’re still human and still make mistakes, so we all misunderstand God sometimes.
style="vertical-align:top"|Suggestions:
style="vertical-align:top"|Assume that many of your thoughts are from God.
style="vertical-align:top;text-align:center| ↔
style="vertical-align:top"|Always start with “I think God says …”

# ce poti invata despre botez acord povestea aceasta?
# ce trebuie sa pun in practic?

(Galateni 5:22)
When we receive God’s Spirit, something happens in us and this becomes obvious to the outside as well (example: Acts 19:6). We receive supernatural gifts (1 Corinthians 12:1-11 and 14:1-25). These are a support for us and we use them so that others can experience God’s power as well and we can disciple them.
